YaCy is a project which has been developed under the premise that we are looking towards a move away from centralised servers controlling our search engines. YaCy aims to break the control Google has over the search engine market by deploying an open source search engine that can be used withinan intranet system and online. As an IT service the YaCy engine is not based on the traditional idea of search entries being run through a central server but instead works through peer-to-peer connections. YaCy project leader Michael Christen stated - "Most of what we do on the Internet involves search. It's the vital link between us and the information we're looking for. For such an essential function, we cannot rely on a few large companies, and compromise our privacy in the process". To access YaCy users download the software and then act as peers for search. The IT security of this service is being managed by ensuring all search requests are encrypted. The system, though operational is still very young and will require further advancement and maintenance - YaCy is looking forward to collaborating with developers and coders to help develop the system further.
