The videoculture festival held this year in Nottingham announced Minecraft the winner of the New Art Award at it's finale. The game was developed by Swedish IT company Mojang. It uses a sandbox concept where the player builds objects using blocks in a free randomly generated landscape. Minecraft beat games from rivals including Valve and Mircosoft's llomilo. Mojangs founder, Markus Persson, he said Its a great honour to be compared to these games. The game, though still in beta has already been bought by nearly 4 million people and this number is steadily increasing- some critics are claiming over the last 6 months the game has gone viral. The game as an IT product is credited for being simplistic and addictive. In an industry where photorealism is being openly advertised as the future, this game breaks the mould. The game won not because of advanced graphics or a complex gaming premise- it won because it encouraged gamers to become creative.
